In another honor for the academic community, Dr. Naghi Shabanian, a faculty member at the University of Kurdistan, has been appointed as the Head of the Secretariat for "Low Forest Cover Countries" (LFCCs) by the decree of the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations.

According to the Public Relations Office of the University of Kurdistan, through an official decree from the Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the UN and the Secretariat of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF), Dr. Naghi Shabanian was appointed to the position of "Head of the Secretariat for Low Forest Cover Countries (LFCCs)."

This appointment aims to lead international cooperation among 66 countries worldwide that have less than 10% forest cover. Iran, with a forest cover of 8.7%, is among these nations.

The Secretariat of this group has been operational in Iran since 2001. The primary objectives and duties assigned to Dr. Shabanian in this role include:

  • International and regional coordination for the protection and development of forest cover.

  • Capacity building and securing financial resources to combat deforestation and desertification.

  • Diplomatic representation and effective presence in international forums on behalf of member countries.
