About the Department of Mathematics

History

The Department of Mathematics at the University of Kurdistan, as the university's inaugural academic department, commenced its activities in 1974, concurrent with the establishment of the Sanandaj Higher Education Complex for Teacher Training. It has consequently played a foundational role in the genesis of higher education within the province. From its inception until 1993, the department exclusively admitted students to its undergraduate program in Mathematics Education.

In 1993, upon receiving official authorization from the Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology, the department began admitting students to undergraduate programs in both Pure Mathematics and Applied Mathematics. Subsequently, in 2007, admissions for the Bachelor's program in Mathematics Education were reinstated via the national university entrance examination. In alignment with the expansion of postgraduate studies, the department successfully launched a Master of Science program in Applied Mathematics in 2005, followed by a Master of Science in Pure Mathematics in 2007. A further milestone in the department's history was achieved in 2011 with the establishment of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programs in Pure Mathematics (with specializations in Algebra and Analysis) and Applied Mathematics (with a specialization in Numerical Analysis), thereby ushering in a new era of its academic and research activities.

Presently, the Department of Mathematics is active across all three academic levels—bachelor's, master's, and doctoral—and, with its rich and extensive history, is recognized as one of the most well-established and influential academic departments at the University of Kurdistan.

Vision of the Department of Mathematics

Given the historical position of the Department of Mathematics as the foundational nucleus of the University of Kurdistan and its key role in cultivating specialized human resources, the department's vision is centered on the advancement of modern mathematical education and research and the consolidation of its national and regional standing. Benefiting from an experienced academic faculty, comprising three full professors, eight associate professors, and six assistant professors, the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science pursues the following strategic objectives for its future horizon:

*   Separating the Computer Science program to establish an independent Department of Computer Science.
*   Developing interdisciplinary fields aligned with societal and industrial needs, such as Engineering Mathematics and Biomathematics.
*   Strengthening collaborations with the Ministry of Education and Farhangian University to enhance the quality of mathematics education.
*   Expanding the organization of scientific conferences, seminars, and workshops at the provincial and national levels.
*   Enhancing international scientific cooperation and facilitating faculty and student exchange programs.
*   Endeavoring to launch reputable scientific journals in the field of mathematics.
*   Establishing a "House of Mathematics" to identify and support gifted students.
*   Pursuing the establishment of an independent Faculty of Mathematical Sciences.
*   Founding a Research Center for Theoretical Physics and Mathematics for the western region of the country.
