About the Department of Physics

The Department of Physics at the University of Kurdistan initiated its academic activities in 1992 (1371), coinciding with the independence and formal establishment of the university. The department was launched in the former building of the Faculty of Sciences (currently the Faculty of Literature and Human Sciences) with the arrival of Mr. Abdulhasan Basireh and Mr. Mohammad Reza Foroumand. Prior to autumn 1994, the department's operations primarily focused on delivering foundational physics courses and running general physics laboratories for students majoring in Chemistry and Mathematics.

In September 1991, the Ministry of Science officially approved the transition of the institution into the independent "University of Kurdistan" in Sanandaj. From 1991 to 1994, Dr. Ali Akbar Rajabi, who concurrently served as the president of both Razi University in Kermanshah and the University of Kurdistan, and who was himself a physicist, allocated funds to procure new laboratory equipment. This facilitated the establishment and equipping of the general physics laboratories. By autumn 1993, preparations were made to introduce a dedicated Physics curriculum, and formal procedures were initiated to obtain the license for a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) program in Physics.

In 1993, Ms. Fatemeh Taati Asil was recruited as the first official faculty member of the newly independent department. To assess the university's capacity to launch the B.Sc. program, the Ministry of Science commissioned two distinguished professors from the Faculty of Physics at the University of Tehran, Dr. Latif Kashigar and Dr. Samad Farrokhi, to inspect the facilities in Sanandaj. Following their favorable evaluation report, the Ministry authorized the University of Kurdistan to admit its first cohort of students in the Physics Education program starting in October 1994 (Mehr 1373).

Following the launch of the B.Sc. program, and with the valuable support of Dr. Yasrebi, then-president of the University of Kurdistan, the department expanded its academic team by recruiting Dr. Mohammad Mehdi Sultanzadeh, Mr. Saeed Soltanian, and Mr. Behrouz Malek-Alkalami, triggering a period of significant academic growth. Along with the undergraduate program, advanced laboratories including Physics III, Modern Physics, and Optics were fully equipped alongside the existing Physics I and II laboratories.

In 2003 (1382), the department launched its Master of Science (M.Sc.) program, initially offering specializations in Solid State and Theoretical Physics. With the continuous expansion of research laboratories and the recruitment of highly qualified young faculty members, the M.Sc. program soon introduced further specializations, including Gravity and Cosmology, Elementary Particles and Field Theory, Condensed Matter Physics, Nanophysics, Quantum Science and Technology, Photonics, and Optics and Lasers. Furthermore, starting in 2006 (1385), the department secured ministerial approval to offer Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in Condensed Matter Physics, Photonics, Astronomy and Astrophysics, Elementary Particles and Field Theory, and Statistical Physics and Complex Systems.

The first Head of the Department of Physics was Mr. Abdulhasan Basireh, who led the department during its formative years from 1994 to 1997. We highly honor and cherish the memory of all individuals who have contributed to the establishment, development, and academic excellence of the Department of Physics at the University of Kurdistan.

Departmental Vision

Following nearly twenty-eight years of academic excellence and significant research milestones—achieved through the dedicated efforts of faculty, staff, and students—the department’s future trajectory focuses on recruiting distinguished young faculty, establishing advanced research laboratories, and implementing industry-oriented research projects. These initiatives represent fundamental steps toward ensuring continuous qualitative and quantitative growth.

National Competitive Standing

The Department of Physics at the University of Kurdistan is recognized as a premier (Level 1) research entity in Iran. The presence of internationally acclaimed scholars, a diverse range of contemporary specializations, and a vibrant community of postgraduate researchers, including postdoctoral fellows and international students, have positioned the department as a formidable competitor on both national and global scales.
